Avast antivirus offers a comprehensive set of features included in a simple package. Its malware engine got an outstanding score during my tests, and its web security was effective at catching websites that were phishing and able to bypass Chrome and Firefox’s default detection systems. The performance scanner also performed well in keeping its impact on system performance to an absolute minimum. In fact Avast’s performance scanning was more efficient in decreasing the CPU use than any other program I tested.
Avast also provides a variety of other tools. Avast One is the only one that offers an VPN, a photo vault, and an instrument for monitoring data breaches. Its security toolkit also includes the sandbox to run applications and the ability to scan routers for weaknesses.
Avast offers a full support website with a knowledge base in case you have issues. Its search function makes it easy to find answers to frequently asked questions. If you’re not able to find the answer, Avast’s forum is a great resource to seek help from other users.
Avast might claim that it no longer sells data regarding its users, but the past of this practice is popular in many people’s minds. PCMag and Motherboard reported in January of 2020 that Avast had sold personal information as well as location data of its customers through its Jumpshot subsidiary. Avast has since stopped this practice and now asks users to sign-up during new installs of its desktop AV software. The privacy policy of the company says that information about consumers is “stripped and removed from the database” before being shared with third party.
